This series of black ink drawings were influenced by the Japanese art of Sumi-E, which was brought to Japan by Zen priests. Sumi-E is made up of the words for ‘black ink’ (sumi) and picture (e). Nothing is wasted; beauty is condensed to a few lines on pure white paper. Drawing through a medative approach freeing the mind and focusing on body movement moving naturally and unconsciously across the paper.
For this series of abstract drawings I have used domestic household brushes with ink and water. Sweeping the surface with water letting the ink bleed into the brush marks, as it moves and breaths across the surface, it is immediate and of the moment. In a trance-like state, thoughts of natural movements of wings, feathers, carp and hair are expressed with my own body movements; the act itself is a kind of performance of which the marks become the record.

Using silver leaf to create lines that generate tension of stillness pulling against the movement.
