I’m Tired of …

The I’m tired of … installation, exhibited at Foundation OBRAS in Portugal, comprises seven large paper hangings ranging from 2 to 5 metres in height. Each is worked in mixed media on both sides—through painting, printing, and stencilling techniques—resulting in a total of fourteen distinct images.

A performative process involved using the body as a press to imprint falling figures within layered grids, textiles, and texts. The work developed as a visceral response to the Grenfell tragedy and a profound frustration with the authorities’ apparent lack of compassion toward those affected.

The disaster itself—and the broader reality of a world in which such a tragedy can occur—evoked a wider contemplation of injustice, both socially and personally. A final layer of printed building materials suggests a liminal space: one caught between looking outward toward a fractured world and inward into a disappearing private realm.

Venezuelan composer Miguel Noya contributed a sound composition to the installation, inspired by the “I’m tired of…” refrains. Evoking themes of blame, frustration, and disillusionment, he constructed a layered mix of electro-post-industrial sound, incorporating barking dogs, political speeches, casino ambience, and local recordings from a marble cutter, church choir, and sheep bells. Central to the piece is the Shepard tone—an auditory illusion of an endlessly ascending or descending pitch—mirroring the visual motif of falling bodies. Noya notes that this tone creates an unsettling tension, enhancing the installation’s atmosphere of emotional unease.
