This series of abstract paintings begins with ink and gesso on canvas or linen—such as in Green/White—drawing inspiration from the Japanese art of Sumi-E and the Mono-ha movement. In the Line series of oil paintings, every brushstroke is deliberate; beauty is distilled into a single mark of oil colour applied to a wet surface that breathes and flows in the moment. Created in a trance-like state, the process frees the mind and allows the body to move naturally and unconsciously, with the act itself becoming a performative gesture whose marks serve as its record. Tilting the canvas introduces a directional flow, while tension arises through the interruption of this movement by rigid lines of brighter colour.
