In 2022, during a residency in Portugal, a series of ink and tile paintings were created in response to 18th-century Azulejo ceramic tiles. The playful, bleeding blue-ink marble tiles drew inspiration from historic erotic imagery discovered at the Estremoz market, as well as local characters and creatures from the surrounding region.
The blue ink paintings evolved into a series titled Prosthetic Pin-Ups, developed in response to an accident and hip replacement surgery during the final week of the residency. The title is a pun on the inadvertent exposure of undergarments—an ‘oops’ moment—humorously embodied by a small dog, reflecting the awkwardness of dressing and undressing after surgery.
