Launched at the Whitechapel Gallery in London in 2007, this highly personal artist’s book was developed during a residency in Japan. It journeys into the dark heart of a complex society—where women dress as men to chaperone other women, where gangsters linger on street corners, all set against the backdrop of one of the most futuristic, intricately ordered yet chaotically alive cities in the world.

In Tokyo Tales, manga and pornographic anime collide with the traditional worlds of the geisha and samurai, resulting in a striking and surreal fusion. The book presents a unique collection of drawings, photographs, screen prints, and paintings that reflect a multifaceted experience of Tokyo.
Tokyo Tales is available in two editions: a special artist’s edition featuring personalised silk covers or flocked Japanese patterns, and a bookshop edition with silver-foiled faux-silk covers.
